As most of us know all too well, cleaning and parenting often go hand in hand. While the best vacuum cleaner can keep your home looking nice and neat day-to-day, sometimes you want something with a little extra scrubbing power for those deep cleans.
Luckily, the best steam cleaners can make light work of mucky surfaces, floors and even fabrics, and are considered household heroes by many Mumsnet users.
Steam cleaners can reach the places where robot mops can't, so when you find out what else they can clean – ovens and taps, we’re looking at you – you’ll be completely sold.
To help you find the best steam cleaner for your needs, we first started by searching the Mumsnet forums – home to the UK's largest online network of parents – to find the models and brands our users have tried, tested and genuinely loved. Next, we extensively researched recommendations from cleaning industry experts, gathering suggestions on the products that really do work.
To narrow down our shortlist and make sure we were only recommending the very best, we also analysed hundreds of authentic, verified customer reviews to see how each model holds up in real family homes. And finally, a couple of top contenders were put through their paces by Mumsnet editors to see how they handled everyday cleaning challenges – from sticky floors to grimy grout.
From popular brands like Vax and Shark to the coveted Kärcher, you'll find the most (ahem) esteemed cleaners in our carefully curated round-up. So, without further ado, here is our guide to the best steam cleaners and best steam mops to buy in 2026.
Looking for more ways to keep on top of household chores? We've also got handy guides to the best carpet cleaners and best budget vacuums.

What Mumsnet users say
A big favourite amongst Mumsnetters, Kärcher is a leading light in the steam cleaner market. While it's not as powerful as the brand's SC5 model (you can read more on that further down our list), the SC3 is our best steam cleaner pick overall thanks to its excellent cleaning results around the home and relatively affordable price tag.
Heating up in just 30 seconds, it cleans everything from floors to taps, and you can even use it to tackle stubborn grime on your hob. It also includes a range of accessories, including a microfibre floor cloth, hand nozzle, and round brush to help you spruce up almost all hard surfaces in your house.
The downsides? We wish the power cord (4m) was a little longer for convenience, plus a few reviewers noted that it can leave surfaces very wet after use. Some Mumsnetters also found Kärcher cleaners are a bit of a faff to lug out, but they are designed for heavy-duty cleaning rather than quick touch-ups, so we think it's worth the occasional effort for a sparkling clean home.

What Mumsnet users say
Shark is many Mumsnetters’ go-to brand when it comes to quality steam mops and cordless and upright vacuums. But it’s the Shark Steam and Scrub Steam Mop that really seems to have everyone in a spin.
The mop’s two scrub pads, rotating 150 times per minute, work wonders on even the most stubborn of stains while being gentle on hardwood floors. Mumsnetters who took the plunge love the Steam and Scrub’s swivel steering, allowing them to glide around furniture, and the generous 5.2m cord, giving them freedom to roam. It even has helpful LED headlights so filth has nowhere to hide. There are three steam settings, plus a fab steam blaster function for when things get really mucky.
The water tank can be removed for easy filing and the Shark Steam and Scrub heats up in just 20 seconds, meaning you can get to grips with those tough stains almost immediately. We would like a bigger tank capacity, but the lightweight nature of the Steam and Scrub is a huge part of its appeal.

There's no doubt that portable devices like handheld vacuum cleaners are a game changer for small tasks around the house, so we were thrilled to discover Beldray's latest steam cleaner doubles up as both a handheld and upright steamer.
By their very nature, steam cleaners are multi-functional, but with 10 accessories included and the ability to tackle up to 15 cleaning jobs, the Beldray's versatility is particularly impressive given its relatively small price tag. As well as keeping your nooks and crannies clean, it also does a mighty fine job of sprucing up carpets and sealed wood, laminate, and tile floors. Not bad for £50.
Weighing just 2kg, it’s very lightweight, which makes it great for a quick blitz around the whole house. However, this does mean it feels flimsy in comparison to more premium models, and it's not made of tough enough stuff for serious deep cleaning. Some users have also grumbled that it has a tendency to leak water during use, which isn't ideal.
That said, this steam cleaner offers good value and is a decent entry-level choice for any beginners curious about the benefits of steam cleaning without wanting to splash out on a high-end model.

I found the Vileda Steam Mop Plus really easy to use and ideal for keeping on top of everyday cleaning. It heats up in just 15 seconds, and the swivelling triangular head makes it easy to get into tricky corners and right up to skirting boards. The six-metre cord gives you plenty of reach without having to keep switching plug sockets, and I liked that the microfibre mop pads can be popped in the washing machine, making it a relatively cost-effective and eco-friendly option.
However, it’s definitely better for regular quick mops rather than deep cleaning. You may eventually have to invest in more steam pads, too – though they can be reused 200 times each, so you'll have to do a whole load of mopping before needing to buy these.
While you can’t use it with floor cleaners or carpet shampoos, the included glider does help freshen up rugs and carpets to keep them looking their best. If you’re looking for a lightweight, fuss-free steam mop that gets the job done without relying on chemicals, I think this is a great choice for the price.
Most powerful steam cleaner
Kärcher SC5 EasyFix Steam Cleaner
Very powerful
Good safety features

Good capacity
On the pricey side, but some would argue it's a great investment
Bulky

Our second Kärcher on this list, the SC5 is the brand's most powerful model, with a 4.2 pressure bar and enough capacity to clean an area of up to 150 m² before needing a refill. You do pay for the power though, and this pricey model will set you back over £400 – over double what the aforementioned SC3 costs.
However, if you want a steamer that does it all, this is it, killing 99.9 percent of common household bacteria as it goes. While it powers through both hard floors and carpets easily, it also has attachments that allow it to clean bathrooms, around taps, inside the oven, wall tiles and mirrors, to get every inch of your home sparkling clean using nothing but tap water.
We love the VapoHydro function, which adds a spray of hot water to your steam clean to help you shift even really dried-on dirt and stains. There's also a child lock on the steam gun for added peace of mind.
With a heat-up time of three minutes, it does take longer to get to work than other options, but for an impressive deep clean, it's more than worth the wait.

If you’re after an affordable steam cleaner that can handle pretty much anything, the Vax Steam Fresh Home is a great buy. It’s not just for floors – the range of attachments means you can tackle everything from grout and hobs to windows and carpets. I was really impressed with how powerful the steam jet is, cutting through dried-on grime with barely any effort. The handheld unit detaches easily too, making it great for spot-cleaning tricky areas like taps, skirting boards and kitchen surfaces.
It’s not perfect – the detergent runs out quickly in upright mode, and I found the tank can leak if the handheld unit isn’t clicked back in properly. The long power cord can also get in the way, though there’s a hook to keep it tidy. However, for the price, I think it’s excellent value, especially considering how many different cleaning jobs it can take on. If you want one machine that can freshen up your whole home without too much elbow grease, I’d recommend it.

Dirty carpet? Filthy windows? Mucky mattress? Whatever needs a spruce up in your home, the H2O X5 Premium Edition has a tool for it.
With its three levels of steam cleaning, this lightweight but punchy mop powers through dirt and stains on carpets, rugs and hard floors, including laminate, granite, marble, sealed hardwood and tiles. We also love the clever angled head, which makes it super easy to get into corners easily.
As it's so lightweight, there have been reports that it feels flimsy and that the water tank is too small, but you may find its ease of use and general manoeuvrability trump these complaints.
On a brighter note, the H20 X5 Premium transforms into a handheld window cleaner and garment steamer, meaning you get even more bang for your buck.

The multi-use Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner makes very short work of tiles in the kitchen and bathroom, cutting through grease and dirt easily, and deep-cleaning grout lines and even porous tiles.
That's not all though; it’s a bit of a showstopper in a whole range of situations. If your family has allergies, it’s useful for steam-cleaning mattresses, and it’s great for furniture, soft furnishings and baby car seats, too.
The 17-piece accessories kit means you have the nozzle, brush or cloth for every job you can imagine around the home - from cleaning an oven or barbecue, to doing the floors or curtains. Its large tank also means fewer trips back to the tap to refill, though that does mean it's bulkier than upright options.
The Dupray heats steam up to 135°C and kills 99 percent of bacteria, so it’s ideal for cleaning around the loo and other difficult-to-reach areas of the bathroom. The heat of the steam means you can sanitise and deodorise as well as simply clean.
Steam cleaners vs steam mops: what’s the difference?
Steam cleaners and steam mops work the same way - both use high heat and steam to clean surface stains.
Steam cleaners are versatile machines that can be used on different surfaces like hobs, taps, bathroom tiles, etc., while a steam mop can really only tackle hard floors and sometimes carpets.

How does a steam cleaner work?
The water in the tank of a steam cleaner is heated past boiling point, forming pressurised steam. The high temperature of this steam lifts dirt, so it can be wiped away, and also kills harmful bacteria, germs and viruses, as well as dust mites.
What surfaces can I use a steam cleaner on?
Depending on the make and model, steam cleaners may be used on the following surfaces:
Sealed hard floors
Carpets and rugs
Windows
Grouting
Mirrors
Ovens
Cooker tops
Barbecues
Taps
Upholstery
Mattresses
Mirrors
Sealed countertops
Toilets
Car alloys
Always check before steaming that the area you are cleaning can be steamed. Don’t try to steam unsealed floors, painted surfaces, delicate fabrics like leather and silk, or certain types of plastics which may warp when exposed to heat.
How to choose the best steam cleaner or mop for your home
When deciding on the best steam cleaner or steam mop for your home, you should consider the following:
What you need to clean: Consider first what you mainly want to use the steam cleaner on, for example, carpets, hard floors, general cleaning or upholstery. Some steam cleaners can transform into handheld steamers to tackle taps, clean windows and even double as garment steamers. It might be that you want it to do a bit of everything and that’s definitely possible, but it might cost you a bit more.
Size and weight: Look at the dimensions and weight before you buy, and think about where you might store your steam cleaner when not in use.
Cost: How much you spend will depend on the type of steam cleaner you choose. Steam mops will be cheaper than cylinder steam cleaners, for example.
Attachments: Think about what type of attachments, such as nozzles or brushes, will be useful to you. Some steam cleaners come with a multitude of accessories to tackle different parts of the home.
Water capacity: The larger the water tank, the less you have to refill it. But a big water tank will mean a heavier and more bulky steam cleaner.
Pressure and steaming time: This will be an important factor in the type of steam cleaner you choose. The higher the pressure and the longer the steaming time, the deeper the clean you'll get.
Heating time: Look at the time it takes for your steam cleaner or mop to heat up. Usually you can expect this to take a couple of minutes, with some warming up in just 15 seconds.
Cord length: The longer the cord, the more surface area you can cover, depending on the position of your plug socket.
