When researching the best carpet cleaner, there was one clear choice for our top spot: the Vax Platinum SmartWash Pet-Design Carpet Cleaner. Mumsnetters rave about Vax carpet cleaners, and during testing I was equally impressed, rating its performance and efficiency when tackling deep or stubborn stains.

Although it's a large machine that requires a considerable amount of space to store, its ergonomic design and motion sensor make it really straightforward to use. It automatically dispenses solution and washes your carpets as you push forward and dries as you pull back, with no need to hold down a trigger, something that will be appreciated during longer, deeper cleans. 

Another highlight is the large spinning Flexforce brush heads – they successfully lift even ingrained dirt and pet hair from your carpets, making light work of grubby high-traffic areas in your hall or living room.

With a substantial 8m power cord and weighing less than 6kg, this lightweight machine can tackle dirty carpets across your entire home with ease. 

Quick and easy to set up, simply add tap water and correctly measured detergent, and you're good to go. The strong bristle brush and powerful jet spray penetrate the cleaning solution deep into your carpets to lift stubborn dirt and grime – a blessing if you have kids or pets. 

While you do need to keep your finger on the trigger to operate, it makes light work of stains and spills. I was also really impressed with this cleaner’s drying performance. Unlike some other cheap cleaners, it left my carpets just slightly damp, with fabric fibres that looked lifted and refreshed. 

You won’t find any additional attachments for upholstery or stairs on this carpet cleaner, but you really can’t quibble for the price.

A word of caution, however – this cleaner can be pretty noisy, so it's not a task to start if your kids like a lie-in on a Sunday morning. We also recommend using the mighty Max Clean a little more sparingly to protect your carpet’s pile.

I’d describe the Shark CarpetXpert as the Goldilocks of upright carpet cleaners – it’s not too big and not too small, but just right. A compact yet powerful cleaner, it effortlessly zaps away dirt, grime, and bacteria to leave your home clean and hygienic.

While its water tanks are smaller than some of our other best carpet cleaners, its impressive suction, high-speed brushroll, and pressurised detergent spray can power through stains the first time, breathing life back into the fibres of your plush rugs and thick-pile carpets.

I loved the built-in stain and spot remover for smaller jobs, and there's also an additional upholstery tool and crevice tool that ensures close contact around skirting boards.

While it’s a little disappointing to be restricted to Shark detergent, I was pleasantly surprised by the non-overbearing fragrance, which left my room smelling fresh and clean. What's more, once you’ve whizzed around the living room, the dry function helps banish excess moisture so you won’t be left with soggy socks.

If you’re limited on storage space or are seeking a super lightweight design to carry up and down your stairs, the Vax Compact Power Plus is certainly worth considering.

OK, so it’s not technically a carpet cleaner, but if your home has sealed hard floors like tiles, wood or sealed laminates, the cordless Vax Glide definitely deserves a spot on your wishlist.

Removing 99% of bacteria to leave your floors clean and fresh, this lightweight hard floor cleaner can wash, clean and dry in one relatively compact appliance. Thanks to the dual edge brush heads, it offers efficient cleaning for your kitchen and bathroom, soaking up fresh spills and getting to grips with stubborn, dried-on stains. 

Its price tag might feel a little eye watering, but after four months of testing, I think the Vax Glide is a worthy investment, and it was a game changer for tackling my family's everyday filth. While its cordless design is limited to 20 minutes run time per charge, its easy operation and convenience encouraged me to clean more regularly – and thankfully without having to drag out my mop bucket!
