Whether they’re exposed to your kids’ muddy footprints, pets, spills or accidents, it doesn’t take much for your once pristine carpets to be left looking dull and grubby. While using the best vacuum cleaner regularly can collect loose dust and dander from high-traffic areas, you’ll need something that goes a little deeper to remove more stubborn stains and grime.
The best carpet cleaners can provide a professional finish at home, removing dirt, stains and allergens to breathe new life into the fibres of your carpets or rugs.

After that, we scrutinised verified consumer reviews and researched suggestions from cleaning experts to develop our shortlist of the products that performed well across the board. Finally, we then conducted our own hands-on testing of select models, ensuring they lived up to expectations.
From big models with substantial water tanks that can tackle even the largest of living rooms, to smaller handheld carpet cleaners for spot cleaning and freshening up your upholstery, here are the best carpet cleaners to suit every budget and home.

What Mumsnet users say
Tested by Mumsnet home editor Poppy O’Neill: Read our in-depth Vax Smartwash Carpet Cleaner review
When researching the best carpet cleaner, there was one clear choice for our top spot: the Vax Platinum SmartWash Pet-Design Carpet Cleaner. Mumsnetters rave about Vax carpet cleaners, and during testing I was equally impressed, rating its performance and efficiency when tackling deep or stubborn stains.
Although it's a large machine that requires a considerable amount of space to store, its ergonomic design and motion sensor make it really straightforward to use. It automatically dispenses solution and washes your carpets as you push forward and dries as you pull back, with no need to hold down a trigger, something that will be appreciated during longer, deeper cleans.
Another highlight is the large spinning Flexforce brush heads – they successfully lift even ingrained dirt and pet hair from your carpets, making light work of grubby high-traffic areas in your hall or living room.
Best of all? The Vax Platinum SmartWash comes with two bottles of powerful antibacterial solution, sturdy attachments and a 2.5m hose, so you can tackle your car, stairs, and upholstery without even breaking a sweat. I also loved the dedicated drying mode, which gets your carpets dry and ready to walk on in as little as an hour.

If you’re looking to refresh your carpets on a more limited budget, this Russell Hobbs cleaner offers impressive performance at a surprisingly affordable price. With a substantial 8m power cord and weighing less than 6kg, this lightweight machine can tackle dirty carpets across your entire home with ease.
Quick and easy to set up, simply add tap water and correctly measured detergent, and you're good to go. The strong bristle brush and powerful jet spray penetrate the cleaning solution deep into your carpets to lift stubborn dirt and grime – a blessing if you have kids or pets.
While you do need to keep your finger on the trigger to operate, it makes light work of stains and spills. I was also really impressed with this cleaner’s drying performance. Unlike some other cheap cleaners, it left my carpets just slightly damp, with fabric fibres that looked lifted and refreshed.
You won’t find any additional attachments for upholstery or stairs on this carpet cleaner, but you really can’t quibble for the price.

What Mumsnet users say
A brand trusted by Mumsnet users and consumers for professional-standard carpet cleaning at home, Rug Doctor promises 30% more suction than similar machines, enabling it to reach deeper into carpet fibres to remove stubborn dirt and grime.
Their patented cross-action brush attacks the carpet fibres from all angles, while the super boost function can provide an extra burst of detergent when you need it most, whether it's a stain from your kid’s spilt squash or accidents from your toilet-trained pup.
While it features wheels and a collapsible handle, this substantial carpet cleaner is best suited for large cleaning jobs. That said, it also includes upholstery tools, which are ideal for tackling smaller clean-up tasks such as your sofa and stairs.

We all love four-legged friends, but muddy paws and ingrained pet hair can quickly leave your carpets looking grubby and unhygienic, with lingering unpleasant odours despite regular vacuuming. The Bissell ProHeat X2 Revolution is designed specifically for homes with pets, boasting three powerful settings that can tackle everything from food spills to dried-in pet stains.
We love that the Bissell has a CleanShot pre-treat feature, which fires out a concentrated spray for three times the performance on those most panic-inducing stains. There’s even a two-in-one upholstery tool included — use it dry to gather pet hair off your cushions or with solution to spot clean those troublesome muddy paw prints on the side of your sofa.
If your in-laws are coming to visit, you’ll be pleased to know the Express Clean mode can have your carpets dry just 30 minutes after use. The HeatWave technology is also excellent for maintaining the water's warmth, ensuring that each sweep of the machine delivers the same level of cleaning. The water tanks are generously sized too, allowing a whole-house clean in one session, without the need to refill.
A word of caution, however – this cleaner can be pretty noisy, so it's not a task to start if your kids like a lie-in on a Sunday morning. We also recommend using the mighty Max Clean a little more sparingly to protect your carpet’s pile.

Unlike full-sized carpet cleaners which can be bulky and tricky to store, the Bissell Spot Pro is a lightweight and portable alternative. Designed specifically for tackling minor stains and spills, it makes light work of unpleasant accidents from your pets or potty training toddlers.
The Spot Pro’s compact design allows for cleaning under furniture without restriction. While it’s less suitable for cleaning an entire room, you can easily switch between the small tough stain tool and the larger attachment, the latter of which is ideal for rugs or car upholstery.
Despite its small size, the XL water tanks mean you won’t spend valuable cleaning time running to and from the sink. This powerful spot cleaner can be a little noisy; however, combining powerful suction and high-quality cleaning detergent, the water colour will leave you gobsmacked after a once-over on the sofa.

I’d describe the Shark CarpetXpert as the Goldilocks of upright carpet cleaners – it’s not too big and not too small, but just right. A compact yet powerful cleaner, it effortlessly zaps away dirt, grime, and bacteria to leave your home clean and hygienic.
While its water tanks are smaller than some of our other best carpet cleaners, its impressive suction, high-speed brushroll, and pressurised detergent spray can power through stains the first time, breathing life back into the fibres of your plush rugs and thick-pile carpets.
I loved the built-in stain and spot remover for smaller jobs, and there's also an additional upholstery tool and crevice tool that ensures close contact around skirting boards.
While it’s a little disappointing to be restricted to Shark detergent, I was pleasantly surprised by the non-overbearing fragrance, which left my room smelling fresh and clean. What's more, once you’ve whizzed around the living room, the dry function helps banish excess moisture so you won’t be left with soggy socks.

If you’re limited on storage space or are seeking a super lightweight design to carry up and down your stairs, the Vax Compact Power Plus is certainly worth considering.
Vax’s smallest and lightest upright model, this portable carpet cleaner is ideal for small rooms, making short work of refreshing carpet in your bedroom or nursery. Weighing just 5.5 kg, you can glide it across carpets without breaking a sweat, before stashing it away discreetly until its next use.
As well as removing ingrained dirt and stains, the Aquaspin brushes are treated with an antibacterial coating, battling bacteria and fungus with every single sweep – ideal for homes with pets.
You won’t find any additional upholstery attachments on this affordable model, but what it lacks in accessories it makes up for in drying performance. Thanks to the HeatBlast technology, your carpet will be damp yet manageable after cleaning, so you can be walking back round your home in no time.

OK, so it’s not technically a carpet cleaner, but if your home has sealed hard floors like tiles, wood or sealed laminates, the cordless Vax Glide definitely deserves a spot on your wishlist.
Removing 99% of bacteria to leave your floors clean and fresh, this lightweight hard floor cleaner can wash, clean and dry in one relatively compact appliance. Thanks to the dual edge brush heads, it offers efficient cleaning for your kitchen and bathroom, soaking up fresh spills and getting to grips with stubborn, dried-on stains.
Its price tag might feel a little eye watering, but after four months of testing, I think the Vax Glide is a worthy investment, and it was a game changer for tackling my family's everyday filth. While its cordless design is limited to 20 minutes run time per charge, its easy operation and convenience encouraged me to clean more regularly – and thankfully without having to drag out my mop bucket!
What is a carpet cleaner?
Carpet cleaners are machines that combine cleaning products with powerful jets of water and rotating brushes, dislodging and removing dirt and stains from your carpet or upholstery. They can also lift the pile in fabric, leaving it looking refreshed and almost as good as new.
Carpet cleaners usually have two tanks – one that sprays clean water onto the carpet, and one that sucks up dirty water from the floor. It’s often astonishing how dirty a carpet can be despite how clean it looks on the surface, and Mumsnet users find it both equally disgusting and satisfying to see the water turn black!
Carpet cleaners come in various sizes, each with a different-sized water tank. Some are more suitable for smaller spot cleaning tasks, while others can tackle a whole room with ease.
Full-sized carpet cleaners often come with extra attachments, including upholstery cleaners and spot cleaners for more precise cleaning, including emergency spills, pet mess and deep stains like red wine.

Which is better: carpet cleaners, steam cleaners or spot cleaners?
The right cleaner will ultimately depend on what you’re cleaning and the stubbornness of the stains.
Carpet cleaners feature large water tanks that can effectively clean substantial surface areas, such as an entire living room or bedroom. While many upright carpet cleaners include smaller attachments, they can be pretty heavy to manoeuvre, making them a little more cumbersome for small clean-up tasks.
Steam cleaners are an excellent way to remove allergens and maintain the hygiene of your flooring. They can also clean multiple surfaces - from rugs and carpets to hard floors and tiles. While they’re a great way to sanitise your surfaces without chemicals, they don’t tend to suck up as much moisture as carpet cleaners – leaving floors slightly damp after use.
Spot cleaners are more compact and portable, making them a valuable tool for small clean-up tasks, such as drink spills and accidental messes from kids or pets. They’re also conveniently sized for freshening up upholstery and cleaning high-traffic areas, such as stairs or the interior of your car. The downside is the smaller water tank, which means you may need to refill it with clean water more frequently.
How to use a carpet cleaner
While exact usage instructions will vary from one brand to the next, they generally follow these key steps:
Move as much furniture out of the way as possible, clearing out portable items to leave the carpets as clear as possible.
Vacuum the entire area thoroughly to collect any loose debris or dirt.
Look out for any noticeable stains which may need pre-treating beforehand.
Prepare the water tanks and detergent as per the brand’s recommendations.
Some cleaners have motion sensors that kick in automatically, while others use a trigger to release detergent. Push forward to clean and pull back to suck up the dirty water and dry the area.
Repeat if necessary.
Give a final once over in suction only mode (without detergent).
Empty the dirty water tank into the sink.
How often you clean your carpets will depend on the number of people in your home and whether you have pets. As a rough guide, families with pets should do a deep clean every three to six months. For families with children or high traffic, a deep clean every six to nine months should be sufficient, and smaller households with low footfall only need to clean their carpets around once a year.
