Reviewed by Mumsnet home editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our in-depth Dyson V15 Detect review
As well as glowing reports from Mumsnet users and reviewers, the Dyson V15 Detect really impressed during our own hands-on testing, confidently earning the top spot for both our best cordless vacuum and best vacuum cleaner overall.
Mumsnet tester Poppy praised this lightweight and portable cordless vacuum for its impressive suction power. As a household with two cats and two dogs, she experienced great results across both hard floors and carpets, with the V15 making light work of lifting pet hair from her rugs and sofas. She loved how easily it converted to a handheld vacuum for fuss-free cleaning on the stairs, while the crevice and brush tools ensured that no dust was left in those hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.
The battery life on this model is generous - you get around 30 minutes run time on auto and up to 60 minutes on the ‘eco’ setting. The power button does need to be continuously compressed during use, however. Although fine for quick clean-ups, this can become a little uncomfortable over time.
Poppy loved the smart features on this model - from the laser dust detection to the remaining battery life display - removing the guesswork when tackling a whole-house blitz. With real-time feedback on her cleaning performance, she also experienced a real sense of achievement once the task was complete.
Best budget Dyson vacuum cleaner
Long cleaning reach
Corded design, so no loss of suction over more extended periods
The ball design is easy to manoeuvre around furniture
Anti-tangle brush
Affordable price level
Need to manually adjust suction settings when moving between hard floor and carpeted areas
Heavy and less portable than cordless designs
No LED headlight, like some of the newer Dyson corded models
Key specs
Price on writing: £199 | Type: Corded bagless upright | Capacity: 1.1 litres | Weight: 7kg | Cleaning reach: 9.5 metres
What Mumsnet users say
If you’re on a more limited budget but still want a Dyson that can handle the detritus from pets (and children), the iconic Dyson Animal Ball is definitely worth considering – and if you’re keen for a corded appliance, it’s also the best upright Dyson for pet hair.
While you won’t find some of the technology, such as LED headlights and auto floor adjustments, on this older corded upright vacuum, the combination of multi-cyclone suction and an anti-tangle brush can tackle shedding from even the longest-haired pets. Once inside the bin, the five-stage advanced filtration system captures 99.9% of nasties, minimising bacteria (and odours) that could otherwise linger in your home.
As you’d expect from a corded design, it’s heavier and bulkier than Dyson’s cordless models. However, we love the large ball at the base, making it really easy to glide across carpets and manoeuvre around furniture. You’ll need to manually switch suction levels as you move between carpets and hard floors, but with a 9.5-metre cable, you’re free to work around the whole house without restriction.

Despite being another model that has been around for a while, the Dyson V8 Absolute Cordless Vacuum remains a worthwhile addition to your wishlist as it’s packed with impressive features.
Praised by reviewers for its lightweight and easy-to-manoeuvre design, it is ideal for everyday use, with powerful suction and detangling technology that makes light work of even embedded pet hair.
You can expect up to 40 minutes of runtime depending on the setting. However, this is significantly reduced when using motorised tools or in ‘max’ mode, so use them sparingly.
Unlike the Dyson V15 Detect, which automatically adjusts to all floor types, the V8 comes with two different head types: a DirectDrive head for carpets and rugs, and a fluffy roller head for hard flooring. Although you need to switch these over manually, the process is relatively quick and straightforward.
While the capacity is relatively small, we appreciate the advanced HEPA filtration, which traps 99.97% of bacteria. It’s also quick and hygienic to empty, ejecting from the base without you needing to touch the contents.
Best mid-range Dyson

Price on writing: £430 | Type: Cordless stick | Capacity: 0.76 litres | Weight: 2.98kg | Battery life: 5 to 60 minutes depending on the setting
What Mumsnet users say
While it’s far from ‘mid-range’ in the world of vacuums, within Dyson’s premium lineup the V11 Advanced Pet sits in the middle - offering top-tier performance without the top-tier price.
With powerful suction of 200 air watts and a Torque Drive cleaner head with detangling technology, it also works great at guzzling up pet hair.
There are several advancements compared to the cordless V8 above, including increased suction power, a larger dustbin and increased battery life of up to 60 minutes. We also love the addition of the LCD display, which shows the remaining battery life, so you always know when to recharge.
Unlike the Dyson V8, the V11 also automatically adjusts its power to suit different floor types, allowing you to glide effortlessly between hard flooring, rugs and thick-pile carpet without needing to adjust the settings manually. Want to save battery life? Opt for the eco mode, while the turbo mode provides a boost on embedded pet hair or dander.
The downsides? If we’re being fussy, the V11 Advanced is slightly heavier and noisier than older models. Like many of Dyson’s cordless designs, you also need to compress the trigger continually during use.

What Mumsnet users say
This compact and lightweight handheld vac is perfect for quick clean-ups - whether that’s blitzing fluff and pet hair from the stairs or cleaning car seats after your child’s adventurous afternoon snack.
Featuring a six-cell lithium-ion battery, this device boasts impressive battery life, lasting up to 50 minutes, depending on the mode of use. It also comes with three additional tools to help tackle all kinds of cleaning tasks, although it’s worth highlighting that despite the reference to ‘boat’ in the name, it’s suitable for collecting dry mess only.
We love the crevice tool, which is capable of reaching into the gaps around your sofa. Meanwhile, the combination tool with a brush can combat fluff and debris from every corner of your stairs. If you’re a pet owner, however, you’ll love the mini motorised tool, which really sets to work on more stubborn dirt such as dried-on mud or embedded pet hair.
Like many other Dysons, the Dyson Car + Boat Handheld features a fully sealed filtration system that captures all the nasties that can be left behind, leaving your car clean, fresh and odour-free.
Are Dyson vacuums the best?
Dysons tend to be at the more costly end of the market, so are they really worth the higher price tag?
Here are some of Dyson’s standout features that make them excel:
Powerful motors – Dyson vacuums feature powerful motors and Cyclone Suction Technology, delivering strong and consistent suction in both their corded and cordless designs. Many Mumsnet users are willing to pay the extra for Dyson’s impressive performance on both carpets and hard floors, especially in households with pets.
High-performance filtration systems – Many Dyson models feature a sealed HEPA filtration system, capturing and trapping even the smallest microns and particles, making them ideal for households with allergies.
Bagless designs – With no additional bags required, Dyson’s bagless designs feature quick-release dustbins, allowing you to rapidly empty the contents without needing to touch the debris.
Battery life or reach - Dyson’s cordless designs tend to offer good battery life, up to 60 minutes, depending on the settings. For their corded designs, they have long cables and substantial reach, allowing you the freedom to navigate the entire house.
Suitability for all floor types – Dysons perform well on all floor types, and while some require manual adjustments, many of their newer models adjust the suction power automatically as you move between hard floors and carpets.
Smart features – Many of Dyson’s newer models include smart features, such as LCD displays that show remaining battery life, LED headlights, and even laser dust detection.
Attachments and accessories - Many of Dyson’s cordless and corded vacuums include motorised brush heads, crevice tools and tools for pet hair, ensuring you can easily adapt to suit your cleaning needs.
Despite their benefits, however, there are some drawbacks to Dyson’s products that have caused some frustrations for Mumsnet users.
Constantly compressed trigger – Many of Dyson’s cordless designs, especially older models, require you to hold down the trigger continuously during use. This can become quite uncomfortable over longer periods.
Small dust bin capacity - While the small bins make most Dysons lightweight and portable, you do need to empty them regularly when doing more substantial clean-ups.

Performing well in our own hands-on testing and with glowing feedback from Mumsnet users and reviewers, the Dyson V15 Detect is the best Dyson vacuum cleaner that you can buy right now.
While it doesn’t come cheap, this lightweight and portable cordless stick vacuum offers impressive suction power, hygienic emptying, and a significant run time, with a clear indication of battery life remaining on the LCD display.
