Reviewed by Mumsnet home editor Poppy O'Neill: Read our in-depth Shark Stratos XL 2.6 Litre Corded Upright Vacuum Cleaner review
The Shark Stratos XL is a bona fide favourite amongst Mumsnetters who regularly have to clean up after their playful pups or long-haired cats, and after testing it out myself, I can see why.
With two cats and two dogs at home (meaning a LOT of fur), I understand only too well the challenges of keeping a house full of pets clean. Luckily, the Shark Stratos was more than up to the task during testing, and thanks to its powerful suction modes, it made light work of embedded pet hair across carpets, rugs and upholstery.
I loved the Anti-Hair Wrap Plus technology, which prevented even long hair from getting tangled or clogged in the brush. Coupled with an anti-allergen seal to trap 99.9% of dust and allergens and an adjustable anti-odour cartridge to eradicate pet stenches, it’s not surprising that this Shark model is also our top pick for the best vacuum for pet hair.
There’s no getting away from the size and weight of the Stratos XL - in fact, it's the heaviest model on our list. However, I liked the flexible hose and practical attachments (including a crevice, multi-surface and motorised pet tool) for targeting those hard-to-reach spots. Thanks to the LED headlights, no dust was left lurking under my living room furniture, while the Lift-Away feature made vacuuming the stairs much easier than expected.
Due to its size, the Shark Stratos may be less convenient for small, everyday touch-ups compared to a lighter cordless model. However, it's perfect for larger homes or deep cleans. With continuous suction, impressive reach and an extra-large 2.6-litre capacity, you can clean your entire house from top to bottom without constantly needing to empty the dustbin.

Best budget Shark vacuum
Shark Classic Lift-Away Pet Upright Vacuum NV602UKT
Budget-friendly price tag
Lift-Away design is convenient for stairs or cleaning at height
Includes several pet-friendly tools
Lighter and easier to manoeuvre than the Stratos
You'll need to manually switch the suction between hard flooring and carpets
Relatively small dustbin
Key specs
Price on writing: £215 | Type: Upright corded | Capacity: 1.1 litres | Weight: 7kg | Cleaning reach: 8-metre cord
While the Shark Stratos XL is great for big households, it’s relatively heavy and bulky, with a large capacity dustbin that may be overkill for smaller homes. The Shark Lift-Away Classic is a lighter and more compact alternative that is a great all-rounder for families and pet owners.
While this budget vacuum lacks some of the smart features you’ll find on more costly models, we love the range of included attachments, including a motorised pet tool for blitzing hair and fluff from upholstery. For convenience, the Lift-Away technology detaches into a portable unit, saving time and effort when cleaning the stairs and high surfaces.
A compact upright with a mid-size dustbin, this model has a long eight-metre power cord, providing significant reach for whole house clean-ups. The downside? You do need to adjust the suction between hard floors and carpets manually, and some reviewers found the strong suction made it hard to manoeuvre on a thicker pile.

While it has a relatively small dustbin considering its eye-watering price tag, the Shark PowerDetect AZ3900UKT Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner is packed full of innovative features that can improve both efficiency and cleaning results, even in households with children and long-haired pets.
Unlike the Shark Stratos XL that took our top spot, the powerful suction on this model works during both forward and backwards motions, automatically adjusting as you move between carpets and hard floors. Thanks to EdgeDetect and DirtDetect technology, you also get an automatic boost of suction when your floors are particularly dirty, or in those tricky areas around skirting boards and corners.
Pet owners will love the easy-to-maintain Anti-Hair Wrap feature, while even the smallest dust particles and odours remain trapped inside by the anti-allergen seal. Last but not least, the Powered Lift-Away feature maintains motorised brush power even when removed from the base, helping you blitz dust, dirt and debris from your stairs without having to lug the whole thing with you.

What Mumsnet users say
It may have a much smaller dustbin than the corded Stratos equivalent, but this lightweight and portable Shark cordless vacuum is practical to use and convenient to store, making it ideal for everyday clean-ups.
Providing the freedom to clean around your home unrestricted, you can expect up to 60 minutes of run time on eco mode. That said, with Clean Sense IQ auto-suction that adjusts automatically depending on how dirty your floors are, you may find the battery drains much faster, especially when cleaning high-traffic areas or your pet’s favourite slumber spot.
Despite its cordless design, this Shark Stratos still provides significant suction power, with a dual brush Anti-Hair Wrap Plus feature that successfully keeps the floor head free from clogs or tangles. With excellent filtration and odour management, it can also keep your home allergen-free and smelling fresh.
We love the LED headlights and folding MultiFlex wand, which protects your back when cleaning hard-to-reach areas like under furniture. You can even quickly convert it to a handheld vacuum when needed, switching between a range of versatile tools for tackling the stairs, sofas or cleaning at height.

Reviewed by Mumsnet tester Tamsin: Read our in-depth Shark Classic Handheld Pet Vacuum Review
If you’re seeking Shark’s superior performance in a more compact, handheld design, look no further. With impressive suction power, this lightweight and portable vacuum is perfect for tackling shedded pet hair on your sofa or clearing the trail of crumbs your kids leave behind on your car seats.
Our tester Tamsin loved the versatile range of accessories provided with this model, including a crevice tool, dusting brush and motorised pet tool. One downside was the run time - it lasted her just 10 minutes per charge. While it will alert you when the battery is running low, you do need to work fast, whizzing around as if you’re getting an unexpected visit from your in-laws.
The 0.45-litre dustbin is around half the size of Shark’s cordless designs, so it will need emptying fairly regularly. That said, this handheld will alert you when the bin is full, before a hygienic one-touch release empties the contents straight into your kitchen bin.
Do Shark make the best vacuums?
Mumsnet users love Shark vacuums for their performance, reliability, ability to blitz pet hair and - despite their often premium price tags - the fact that they offer great value for money. Reviewers and industry experts also agree, with Shark appliances regularly hitting the bestseller lists.
While the exact specifications will depend on the model, here are some of Shark’s standout features that make them stand out from the rest:
Anti-Hair Wrap: If you have long hair or a perpetually moulting pet, you will know the sheer devastation this can have on a vacuum cleaner roller. Shark’s impressive suction, combined with their Anti-Hair Wrap feature, works the hairs out of its rollers as it collects them, preventing them from getting tangled.
Lift-Away: Shark's Lift-Away feature means you can detach the canister from the wand, transforming it into a portable, handheld vacuum unit. This allows you to get to those high and hard-to-reach places and vacuum the stairs with ease.
Flexology: Flexology is a handy feature on some Shark stick vacuum cleaners. The wand bends with the click of a switch, allowing you to vacuum right under the sofa and low-level furniture without straining your back. This feature also means the vacuum can be folded up for easy storage.
Anti-allergen seals: Ideal for households with allergies or pets, these dustbins effectively seal in 99.9% of the smallest allergens, dust and particles, ensuring your home remains clean and hygienic.

Which is the best Shark vacuum cleaner?
When it comes to performance, we think you can’t beat the Shark Stratos range. For large households, the Shark Stratos XL Upright Vacuum Cleaner offers a large capacity and impressive suction power, while the Shark Stratos Cordless provides more freedom for smaller homes or everyday cleanups.
What should I consider when buying a Shark vacuum?
To choose the best Shark vacuum cleaner for your home, you should consider the following:
Bin capacity: A larger bin capacity means that you can clean for longer, but your vacuum may be heavier as a result. As a rule of thumb, cordless vacuum cleaners have a smaller bin capacity than corded models. Handheld vacuums also have a small bin capacity, which is why they're not suitable for big cleaning jobs.
Weight: Larger models may have more power and capacity than smaller ones, but they can be heavier and more difficult to move around. If you suffer from a bad back, arthritis, or mobility issues, you should consider a lightweight vacuum.
Charge and run time/cord reach: The cordless Shark Stratos on our list offers up to 60 minutes of run time after a full charge, but you're more likely to get around 30 minutes depending on what setting you use. If you don’t want to worry about battery life, a corded vacuum offers unlimited run time, though you’ll need to manage the power cable.
Price: Shark vacuum cleaners are generally cheaper than Dysons, but they can still set you back several hundred pounds. The latest models will cost more, but a mid or lower-range model can still be a good option and perform well. That said, many Mumsnetters argue that a quality vacuum cleaner is worth the investment.
