What Mumsnet users say
A high-quality coat that’s built to last, Mumsnet users couldn’t speak more highly of the Seasalt Janelle Coat. Designed to withstand the exposed Cornish coastline, it’s just as cosy for school runs and trips around the city. Available to suit all body shapes and sizes, the Janelle coat comes in tall, regular or petite proportions with sizes from 6 to 28. You can also select from a range of colours – from traditional black and charcoal, to bolder red or mustard shades.
While competition was stiff this year between the Janelle and the Lands' End Squall, we ran the numbers through MumsGPT, and found that the Seasalt Janelle pipped the Squall to the post to become Mumsnet's best winter coat for 2025. While both coats are warm, waterproof, practical and hardwearing, the Janelle is more stylish, so it took the crown.
The Janelle's exterior is made from recycled nylon Tide Cycle, which is both waterproof and breathable for extra comfort whilst offering protection against the elements. We love the detachable hood with a peak to keep those raindrops out of your face, whilst the reflective strips to the rear mean you can be visible even on the darkest winter nights.
Best budget winter coat for women

Waterproof and windproof
Coldheat insulation
Limited colour options

RRP: from £63 | Materials: Polyester | Colour variations: Black, khaki | Sizes available: XXS to XXXL | Hood: Yes
What Mumsnet users say
If you want to keep snug this winter without blowing the budget, you can pick up this warm Trespass Audrey Jacket at a really affordable price. With a windproof and waterproof outer shell, its long sleeves protect you from the chilly winter air, plus it has a nicely fitted silhouette without the fiddliness of a belt.
The coat is surprisingly lightweight for a longline puffer, and features two deep, zip-up pockets to keep your hands toasty. The collar comes up high and the hood is designed to stay up, so you can really snuggle into this coat on a windy or snowy day. At under £75, we think this is a great value coat that'll keep you genuinely warm this winter.
Best warm, waterproof winter coat
Protects against cold, wind and heavy downpours
Drawstring to enhance the waist
Cosy fleece-lined collar
Great length
Perfect for squally school runs
Machine washable
Comes in regular, petite and plus-size fits
Not the most stylish of designs
Key specs
RRP: from £69 | Materials: Nylon, polyester, acrylic, elastane | Colour variations: Black, navy, green | Sizes available: UK 8 to 20 | Hood: Yes
What Mumsnet users say
This practical coat from Lands' End is everything-proof, making it perfect for dog walks and school runs, whatever the weather. With a fleece-lined collar and a popper storm flap for when things get seriously blustery, the Squall coat is packed with thoughtful details Mumsnet users really appreciate on a cold winter's day.
While the jury's out as to whether it's stylish or not, we think it's a versatile coat that will seamlessly fit with your existing wardrobe. We love that it has a drawstring waist so you can nip it in to avoid any Arsene Wenger vibes, and the stadium length hits at a flattering but practical point below the knee (with petite and plus size fits available).
The Squall comes a close second to the Seasalt Janelle, and almost took the top spot this year. Mumsnetters say the Squall is the warmer of the two coats (and it's earned the top spot on our best warm waterproof coats round-up), but in the end the Janelle's more stylish looks meant it won out.

Joules Pembury Black Showerproof Longline Padded Coat with Hood
Long length
Warm and showerproof
Detachable hood
Two zip pockets
Girls version available
Not waterproof
Key specs
RRP: £139 | Fabric: Polyester | Colour variations: Black, navy, khaki, red | Sizes available: UK sizes 6-26 | Hood: Yes
Mumsnetters debate the stylishness of a longline puffer, but there's no getting away from their cosiness. This one from Joules is understated, super warm but lightweight - plus the slightly cinched waist avoids giving you that Michelin Man look.
With two zip pockets and a removable hood, it'll keep your hands and head warm. However, the coat is showerproof rather than waterproof, so it's perfect for a rainy dash from the car to the school gates, but won't keep you dry for extended periods of heavy rain. If you need something you can count on in a downpour, we recommend the Seasalt Janelle or Lands' End Squall.
Best wool winter coat
Stylish and smart wool design

Made from 100% wool and lined in Hobbs insignia jacquard
Removable belt
Expensive

RRP: £379 | Materials: 100% wool outer, polyester/viscose mix lining | Colour variations: Camel, black, green, brown, malbec purple | Sizes available: UK sizes 6-22 | Hood: No
What Mumsnet users say
Hobbs is a brand that comes up again and again when Mumsnetters share recommendations for wool coats. With many variations available, we turned to MumsGPT to crunch the data, and the Livia came out on top as Mumsnet's most highly-rated Hobbs wool coat for 2025.
It's a timeless, chic design, hitting just below the knee (petite sizing is available, too), and featuring a removable belt, two side pockets and a concealed button fastening.
Thanks to the natural lanolin coating found on wool fibres, it's a naturally water-resistant fabric - despite the myth that wool clothing will shrink at the first sign of rain. While it's not suitable for heavy downpours, a classic wool coat like this one will keep you warm and dry in light showers.
Best coat for extreme cold
Extremely warm for icy days
Not restrictive
Totally waterproof
Two inside pockets
Fixed hood
Key specs
RRP: £146 | Materials: Polyester, polyamide | Colour variations: Green, dark blue, rust | Sizes available: EU sizes 34-44 | Hood: Yes
What Mumsnet users say
Swedish brand Didriksons make all-weather, supremely warm coats for men, women and children. While they have a huge number of warm, waterproof parka-style coats, we've picked the Frida to feature as our best winter coat for extreme cold.
With its taped seams, insulated sleeves and a hood that won't budge, this coat won't just keep warmth in, it'll protect you from wind, snow and rain. And at under £150 at the time of writing, it's also one of the best value Didriksons coats around.
The Frida's mid-length means your legs aren't restricted in the way they would be with a longer coat, and the two-way zip gives you even more freedom, especially useful if you're pregnant.

Originally designed as a changing robe for surfers and bodyboarders, Dryrobes have grown hugely in popularity over the last year. They make a practical choice to keep you warm and dry whilst enjoying outdoor adventures - whether that’s winter walks by the sea or supporting your child from the sidelines during drizzly morning football sessions.
With a long-sleeved, unisex design and cosy synthetic lambswool lining, the wind and waterproof shell can keep you well protected, whatever the weather throws at you. Thanks to the internal and external pockets, you’ll also have plenty of space to stash your essentials.

What Mumsnet users say
Did you know that for really cold days, you can even get a coat that heats up? This fleece jacket from Ororo warms up quickly thanks to its three heated panels, and it's slim enough to wear on its own or under a larger coat.
The magic of this coat lies on the inside, with panels around the back and chest that can heat up to three different levels and are controlled entirely by the wearer - much like Ororo's best heated gilet but with sleeves.
This versatile fleece is also perfect for wearing around the house, and its rechargeable battery provides up to 10 hours of warmth. Pop it on at the beginning of a chilly day and you could even turn down the central heating.

What Mumsnet users say
Most Mumsnet users agree that pockets in your winter coat are an absolute must, and you’ll be spoiled for choice with this waved Barbour Kelsall Parka. With six pockets on the exterior alone, you can be confident your hands will be warm and your possessions protected, wherever your travels may take you.
Available in a choice of rustic, black or dark olive colours, with Barbour’s iconic tartan lining, this breathable parka has a drawstring at the waist for a flattering and stylish look. It’ll also keep you nice and warm before you head home and swap it for the best blanket hoodie. We love the faux-fur lined built-in hood for rainy days, and whilst there’s no doubt this is an investment piece, it’s certainly built to last.

Uniqlo have a wide range of women’s coats and thanks to their MySize assist, you can put in your height and weight to find the perfect size for your frame.
This Seamless Down Jacket is windproof and water-repellent, offering excellent protection from the rain and wind, with a simple but well-insulated design that keeps in the warmth without weighing you down. We love the 90% down filling, which is beautifully warm and lightweight.
Best denim jacket

Super soft denim is less structured than some would like

RRP: £100 | Material: 79% cotton, 21% lyocell | Colour variations: Eight | Sizes available: XXS-XL | Hood: No
What Mumsnet users say
Probably the best known denim brand in the world, this trucker jacket from Levi's is a classic that'll never go out of style. With a high cotton percentage and zero stretch, size up if in doubt, for a comfortable fit you can layer under on chillier spring days.
While you can pick up a stylish denim jacket from most high street shops, this one is a cut above and will only improve with age. The understated yet unmistakable red Levi's tab is the only nod to branding on the jacket.
With generous inside pockets, adjustable tabs and flattering curved back seams, we love the attention to detail on this timeless piece.
Best trench coat
High quality tailoring
Water resistant
Stylish and smart
Lightweight
Expensive
Not waterproof
Key specs
RRP: £200 | Material: 94% cotton, 6% elastane | Colour variations: Eight | Sizes available: UK sizes 6 to 22, plus petite | Hood: No
What Mumsnet users say
Want to look effortlessly chic? This timeless trench from Hobbs can be slung over jeans, workwear or dresses to make you look instantly put-together. It's water resistant, so it'll also help you keep your cool if you get caught in a shower. However, it's not water proof - meaning it won't be able to keep you dry for extended periods in a downpour.
At £200, it's pricy, but Mumsnet users say theirs still look new after a few year's wear - a true sign of quality. While it's the Saskia that Mumsnetters recommend above all other trench coats, it looks like Hobbs have launched an updated, but very similar, version called the Skylar.
Best biker jacket
Relatively affordable
Cool, edgy style
Goes with many outfits
Not the warmest option for super cold days
Runs big
Only one colour
Key specs
RRP: £69 | Materials: Polyester and polyurethane | Colour variations: Black | Sizes available: UK 6 to 24 | Hood: No
What Mumsnet users say
When we saw the glowing reviews for this effortlessly stylish biker jacket from M&S, we couldn't resist giving it a coveted spot on our round-up of the best winter coats for women. With a relaxed, oversized fit and a versatile design that goes with just about anything, it offers excellent value for money if you want a jacket under £100.
Admittedly, it's not the warmest coat on our list, so if you're facing rain, snow or extreme conditions, you may want something with a little more insulation. That said, we still think this is a fantastic option for milder days.

Best leather jacket for women
Classic design
Won't go out of style
Brilliant quality
Suitable for day and night wear
Dry clean only
Short length
No hood
Key specs
RRP: £299 | Material: Leather and polyester | Colour variations: Black | Sizes available: UK sizes 6 - 16 | Hood: No
What Mumsnet users say
If you’re looking for a really classic leather jacket that won't go out of style, the Cargo from All Saints could be just the one. Much like the M&S jacket above, this has a stylish, edgy look, but the main difference between the two is that this is crafted from real leather.
Mumsnetters swear by All Saints leather jackets as an investment purchase you'll wear for years to come. This versatile shorter-length coat looks great teamed up with midi dresses and pumps, but also works well with denim and jeans for a more relaxed daytime look.
It’s not the warmest coat on our list, however, so you may want something with a hood for those extra cold days.

How much should a winter coat cost?
The cost of winter coats can vary considerably, but on average you can expect to spend between £150-£200 to get a high-quality waterproof coat that will keep you warm and protect you against the elements.
If you’re going to invest in a more expensive item, it's worth considering the cost per wear and how long the coat will last. Sometimes the phrase ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ does ring true.
How should a winter coat fit?
Coats can vary in terms of fit, with some offering a slimline, fitted design and others a more relaxed, oversized style. As a general rule however, you should avoid getting coats that fit too tightly against your body - not only for comfort but to ensure you have space for layers and room for body heat to circulate freely underneath. You should be able to raise your arms comfortably above your head, without them pulling significantly across the top of your back.
We recommend trying on winter coats where possible, but if in doubt, order the size up for designs that refer to a slim fit.
What is the warmest women's winter coat?
The coats that are the warmest tend to have a high-quality down interior, which traps heat between the pockets in the insulation to keep your core warm and protected against the elements. Most of the warmest coats also have taped seams and a large hood to keep the chill and wind away from your face.
We think The North Face Arctic Parka is one of the best women's winter coats for UK winters as it'll keep you warm without compromising on style. However, if you really want a coat that guarantees warmth no matter how freezing the day, a rechargeable heated jacket like the Regatta Voltera, which includes USB heat panels, is pretty hard to beat.
What is the most affordable women's winter coat?
With energy prices rising and the cost of living in the UK being so unpredictable, we know that not everyone has hundreds of pounds to spare on a new coat, despite us needing to keep warm. The Trespass Clea Waterproof Jacket comes in at just under £50 (depending on size), which we feel is excellent value for money based on its credentials.
What coats are in fashion for winter 2024/2025?
From a fashion perspective, we love the North Face Arctic Parka, which offers the ideal combination of practicality and style. That said, not everyone will be willing to shed out such a significant price tag, hence why the Seasalt Janelle pips it to the top spot.
