Another favourite amongst Mumsnetters, the Seasalt Janelle Coat comes in a huge range of sizes with fits to suit every body shape, including tall and petite. Want to add a pop of colour to your winter wardrobe? Take your pick from nine different colour ways, including bolder shades like dark cinnamon and oak.

What Mumsnet users say
If you’re looking for a warm, waterproof coat that isn't bulky or heavy when wet, the Helly Hansen Westport is definitely worth considering. With a lightweight and breathable design, it offers some of the highest waterproof protection you can buy, insulating you from chills while repelling moisture.
We love the adjustable design, allowing you to cinch in at the waist for a more figure hugging fit, or tighten the cuffs to prevent drips sneaking in during downpours.
While there is some adjustment on the hood, it’s worth noting that it still fits fairly close around the face - something which may take some getting used to if you’re used to generous faux fur hoods.

Reviewed by Mumsnet editor Laura Westerman: Read our in-depth Dryrobe review
They may be the subject of much debate, but gone are the days where the Dryrobe long sleeved changing robes are only worn by surfers and bodyboarders.
Due to their waterproof and windproof design, including deep rainproof pockets for stashing your keys and mobile phone, these oversized robes have become popular amongst parents - protecting them from wet and windy weather as they watch their kids play five-a-side football.
Mumsnet editor Laura put the Dryrobe through its paces during wet weather and temperatures as low as 3°C and found it to be very warm, drying quickly even after more torrential showers. It’s worth noting however that the fit is oversized, so may be a tad overwhelming for petite or smaller frames.

Mumsnet users love Didriksons, a Swedish brand who produce a wide range of high quality all-weather coats suitable for the whole family.
With a warm, figure-hugging design, the mid-length style and two-way zip on the Erika Parka gives you freedom of movement during longer walks or outdoor exploits.
With a generous faux fur hood and chin guard to keep out that unpleasant wind chill, you can even adjust the cuffs to trap your body heat inside.
While the Erika Parka doesn’t come cheap, it certainly has you covered when it comes to heavy rain showers, with a 10000mm waterproof protection rating to guard against wet conditions.

While the brand’s perhaps better known for its premium range of gym and sportswear, Sweaty Betty also have an excellent winterwear range, including this stylish Stride Parka.
With a generous oversized fit that can be adjusted at the waist, this lightweight and breathable parka is modern and on trend, so you won’t feel like the Michelin man when heading out on a rainy school run.
The spacious front pockets are ideal for stashing your essentials and with a high waterproof rating, you’ll be dry and comfortable come rain or shine. Our only complaint? The colour choices are a little drab and we wish there were some brighter colour options for darker days.

Price: £205 | Material: 80% nylon, 20% polyester | Waterproofing: DryVent™ 2000mm waterproof | Colours: Black and White | Sizes: XS to XXL | Care instructions: Machine wash at 40°C or below
What Mumsnet users say
While it’s another premium option, the lightweight North Face Reign On Parka is ideal for dog walks, school runs and commuting, with a generous, oversized and non-restrictive design that won’t slow you down. It may not be the most flattering choice, but with plenty of space for layers underneath, you can easily adjust the warmth to match your surroundings.
We love the large waterproof pockets and adjustable drawstring on the hood, allowing you to pull the hood tight and prevent rain from getting inside. Thanks to the seam-sealed multi-layer DryVent™ fabrics, this coat is engineered to be waterproof, windproof and breathable, seeing you right through from spring to winter.
What kind of coat will keep you the warmest?
While wool and down coats tend to be the warmest, they don’t tend to be waterproof, meaning they’re less ideal for torrential rainstorms or wet weather conditions.
For warm and waterproof jackets and coats, you should look for warm insulation combined with sealed seams, storm flaps, adjustable hoods and cuffs. This traps in body heat to keep you warmer for longer, while waterproof layers repel water and prevent it from soaking through to the lining.
Is any coat 100% waterproof?
In short, no - no coat is 100% waterproof and even the most waterproof jackets and coats can lose effectiveness over time. You should follow the care instructions closely to maintain your coat’s waterproof performance.
It’s also important to differentiate between phrases like ‘water resistant’ and ‘water repellent’ which are not the same as waterproof. Look for specific waterproof ratings, measured by how many mm of H20 (or moisture) they can withstand.
What’s the best warm waterproof coat to buy?
While it’s a close call between this and the Seasalt Janelle, the Lands' End Stadium Squall is our pick for the best warm, waterproof coat due to its warm, cosy fleece lining and lightweight design that’s available in a huge range of sizes.
