Stubborn marks on your sofa that just won’t shift? Here are the best upholstery cleaner machines and solutions to tackle tricky stains and dirt.
By Lucy Cotterill | Last updated Dec 30, 2025
Living in a busy family home means accidents, stains, and spills on your upholstery can feel almost inevitable. If your once-luxurious sofa is a magnet for mess and dirt, it may be time for a spruce-up.
The best upholstery cleaners are specifically designed for sofas, rugs, carpets and curtains, and they help to remove tough stains and odours without damaging your fabrics. Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly upholstery cleaning solution or a hard-working machine that can clean across your entire home, there are a multitude of different products on the market that can help. But knowing what’s the best option for your cleaning task or fabric type can be tricky.
Here at Mumsnet, we know choosing the right cleaning tools can feel overwhelming - particularly if you're spending a lot of money on an expensive machine. That’s why we’ve done all the legwork for you. We first started by researching honest feedback from Mumsnetters - the UK’s largest online community of parents - to find the upholstery cleaners they rate and use in their own homes. Every floor care guide we produce - covering everything from the best vacuum cleaner to the most effective carpet cleaner - starts with insight from Mumsnetters, as we know nothing beats an authentic, unbiased recommendation from a real person.
After that, we thoroughly analysed verified consumer reviews and evaluated cleaning industry expert picks to develop a shortlist of products that perform well across the board. We recognise that not every upholstery job requires the same product, so we've also investigated which cleaners work best for various tasks.
From machines to solutions, here are the best upholstery cleaners on the market in 2026.

Best upholstery cleaning machines
Best upholstery cleaning machine overall
Lightweight and easy to carry between rooms
Compact design is simple to store
High suction tackles even stubborn stains
Noisy
What Mumsnet users say
The lightweight and portable Bissell SpotClean Pro is one of the most effective spot cleaners for sofas and carpets, quickly lifting stains and spills caused by pets, food or messy toddlers. While it's a corded appliance, the long 6.5-metre power cable should also allow you to tackle the sticky fingermarks all over your car seats without feeling too restricted.
It includes a starter bottle of cleaning solution, plus two handy attachments that make this powerful machine even more versatile. The narrow Tough Stain Tool provides focused suction to lift even dried-on dirt, while the large, easy-to-hold standard tool can tackle more substantial soiled areas with ease.
While it can be a little noisy during use, it's highly effective and features an extra-large 2.2-litre tank that collects dirty water, ready to be poured away. Prepare yourself to be shocked and strangely satisfied by the colour!
For households with particularly mucky pups, there's also a Pet Pro version (£170 from Argos), which works much like the original but is designed to tackle the tougher messes left behind by four-legged friends.

Vax SpotWash Duo Cordless Spot Cleaner, £89
Good value for money
Includes multi-purpose and hard floor attachments
Lightweight
Cord length is not as long as the Bissell above (4.5m)
What Mumsnet users say
With its slim and compact design, this grab-and-go cleaner provides a quick and convenient way to tackle everyday touch-ups and spills on your carpets and upholstery.
Using powerful suction, the multi-purpose attachment efficiently removes odours and stains, cleaning deep into the fibres of sofa cushions and rugs. There’s even a hard floor attachment too, which makes light work of stains or dirty footprints across sealed tiles or hardwood flooring.
The Vax SpotWash Duo couldn’t be easier to fill and empty, and thanks to the self-cleaning function, you can be confident no dirt or debris will be left behind in the hose. Our only complaint is that the cord length is two metres shorter than the Bissell SpotClean, but overall it’s a pretty impressive piece of kit.

Reviewed by Mumsnet editor Rebecca Roberts: Read our in-depth Shark Carpet Xpert review
A versatile carpet and upholstery cleaner, I found the Shark Carpet Xpert suitable for all kinds of cleaning challenges, from removing dirt and bacteria in carpets to breathing life back into plush rugs, sofa cushions and car seats.
Using a combination of impressive suction, a high-speed brush roll and pressurised Shark detergent, this upright yet relatively compact carpet cleaner easily combats stains the first time round. It even left my seven-year-old IKEA cream rug looking brand new, which is no mean feat.
In addition to covering larger areas like rugs and curtains, I’ve found the built-in hose-cleaning tool brilliant for spot cleaning upholstery. So, while it might be a pricey option, given how much it can do, I think it offers decent value for money.
The Shark's water tanks are smaller than some on other upright carpet cleaners, but luckily, they're very easy to empty and clean. I also loved the dry function, which uses powerful suction to remove excess moisture after use.
I was disappointed that you’re restricted to using Shark’s own detergent with the Carpet Xpert - an extra cost to bear in mind - but it does come with a starter bottle, and I’ve found the fragrance banishes odours without being overbearing, leaving rooms smelling fresh and clean.

What Mumsnet users say
For small cleaning tasks such as pet accidents, wine spills, or chocolate stains on your sofa, it doesn’t get much easier than Dr Beckmann’s Upholstery Cleaner - setting to work in just three minutes.
With no additional tools required, the integrated nozzle features a two-in-one triangle soft brush, helping you reach every corner and crevice with ease. Simply turn it upside down, gently squeeze and then scrub.
We love how this powerful cleaner lifts away stains and odours without damaging fabric fibres, leaving behind a pleasant, non-chemical scent. Thanks to the sponge in the nozzle, you won’t be left with a saturated sofa either.
Admittedly, a floor cleaning solution isn’t going to provide as deep a clean as the carpet and spot cleaners above, but this is the best option if you don’t want to splash out on a pricey machine for just mopping up occasional stains.

What Mumsnet users say
Mumsnet users swear by budget-friendly cleaning brand Astonish, and their Oxy Active Stain Remover is ideal for cleaning up a wide range of messes across your carpets and upholstery.
With an easy-to-use trigger spray, this cheap and cheerful cleaner quickly sets to work. Simply spray directly onto the stained area and watch as the foam penetrates deep into the fibres, lifting even dried-on stains and dirt, such as coffee, red wine and pet mess.
While the worst offenders may need a repeat application, in most cases, Astonish leaves nothing behind but the fresh lotus flower scent.
Best upholstery cleaner for car seats
Suitable for all surfaces in your car
Quick and easy to use
Costly
Not suitable for leather (use the Autoglym Leather Spray instead)
If you’ve got pets and children, chances are your car seats and upholstery take quite the battering, from moulting dog hair and dried-on mud, to never-ending crumbs and residue from sticky fingers.
While it’s more costly than some upholstery cleaners, the Autoglym Interior Shampoo can be used across all surfaces of your car’s interior, including your car seats, mats, dashboard and steering wheel. With a fresh and clean fragrance, you can also wave goodbye to Eau de Wet Dog.
For car seats, use a car vacuum in the area and then spray the affected areas with the cleaning solution before gently agitating it with a clean, damp cloth to remove dirt and grime.
What is an upholstery cleaner?
Upholstery cleaners are designed specifically to remove stains, dirt and odours from fabric furniture, including sofas, cushions, car seats and chairs.
Upholstery cleaning machines use suction, cleaning solution and gentle scrubbing to lift away dirt, collecting the dirty water in a tank. Upholstery cleaning solutions typically come in the form of a spray or liquid, applied directly to the stained area before being gently scrubbed with a cloth or brush.

What works better, an upholstery cleaner machine or solution?
For tough stains or cleaning large areas, an upholstery cleaning machine can be highly effective, utilising powerful sprays, suction, and scrubbing to refresh and revive your upholstery with minimal effort. While upholstery cleaner machines are more costly to purchase, they can be a great option for homes with pets and children, where - let's be honest - the likelihood of stains, spills, and accidents tends to be higher.
Upholstery cleaning solutions are a more cost-effective way to tackle small marks or spills on upholstery - from a spilt drink on your sofa to muddy paw prints from your pet. For stubborn stains, however, you may need to apply a repeat treatment. Always perform a small patch test first to ensure the solution is safe for use on your fabrics.
How to clean a sofa with an upholstery cleaner machine
Cleaning your sofa with an upholstery cleaning machine isn’t as complicated as it sounds. Check the instructions for each model, but this is generally what you can expect:
Before you start, gently brush your sofa using a soft brush to loosen any surface dirt, dust, crumbs or pet hair.
Next, give it a once-over with your handheld or cordless vacuum cleaner. If your vacuum has one, choose the upholstery attachment for the best results and a crevice tool to get between your sofa cushions.
If you haven’t already done so, carry out a spot check at the back of your sofa to ensure there is no discolouration or damage to your fabric.
Fill the upholstery cleaner machine with the recommended amount of warm water and cleaning solution.
Following package instructions, pre-treat any stubborn stains by spraying and gently scrubbing with upholstery cleaning solution. Gently scrub into the fabric with a soft brush.
Start at the top of the sofa and work in small sections. Trigger the spray as you run over the fabric and repeat without the spray to collect the dirty water. Avoid over-saturating the fabric.
Allow the sofa to dry completely (this may take a few hours).
Once dry, vacuum again to lift the fibres and re-plump your cushions.
