Overall rating:
What we like
  • Excellent video and audio quality

  • Includes 360° pan and 140° tilt features

  • Excellent battery life - our tester found that a single charge lasted all night

  • WiFi-free connection

  • Very good signal range (tester tried it out up to 20m)

  • Has a mode which alerts you to baby stirring with screen switching on rather than noise coming through, which can be less intrusive

What we don't like
  • There's an inbuilt video of a baby which plays when you first switch on the monitor, which can be a bit off-putting/alarming at first

Our verdict

This is an excellent baby monitor with so many intuitive, useful features. Its best features are the picture quality, huge screen and the screen alert. This is such a useful feature as when we’d be watching TV downstairs we’d have the sound off, but if our son made a noise the screen would light up, alerting us that way.

I like the 360° pan and 140° tilt feature meaning I can see the entire room (sometimes this is just watching my cat lurking around!) I also love the compact nature of the screen - just bigger than an iPhone which means it fits into my pocket to carry around if I need to carry other things (mainly washing!) I also find the handset/screen really intuitive to use and adjusting settings if needed was easy.

There's not much I would change about the monitor, but if I had to pick one thing it would be the lullaby function. I personally have never used this on any monitor I’ve had in the past, though other parents might find it useful.

The only other niggle is that there is a video of a baby that shows up on screen when you first turn it on which is quite off putting as your first thought is WHO is that and where is my baby?! I don’t think that adds anything to the user experience so something which could be removed.

This monitor surpassed all of my expectations. It feels sturdy and robust and with excellent video quality is a really reliable and worthwhile investment.

How we tested the Momcozy BM01 Baby Monitor

I tested the Momcozy baby monitor out over a period of six weeks. During this time we used the monitor both at home to keep an eye on our 20-month-old as well as at their grandparents' house, where the monitor was used for nap times. During testing I took extensive notes on how well the monitor performed, taking into consideration a variety of different factors including its signal strength, ease of set up, video and audio quality and overall value for money. I also assessed how durable it felt (always important in a household with small children!) and the peace of mind it gave us when using. Taking all this into consideration, I scored the monitor carefully on a set of eight key criteria using a carefully curated scoring system put into place for Mumsnet reviews.

Momcozy BM01 Baby Monitor: what's included?

The Momcozy BM01 box includes the monitor camera and parent unit, an AC power adaptor, cables, plugs and a wall mounting kit.

My first impressions of the monitor were that the camera looked really robust - chunky but also sleek and aesthetically pleasing.

The instructions were really easy to understand, with clear images supported by  bullet points to follow.

How easy is the Momcozy baby monitor to set up for first use?

We took it out of the box and set it up very easily though it’s suggested that you charge fully beforehand, so we left the screen charging for 12 hours to ensure it was ready to go.

I expect you could use it straight out of the box if needed, but would need to keep the charging cable plugged in to the screen.

The monitor and camera were paired already on opening and we knew where we wanted to place it, as this monitor was to replace one that broke so we hung it on the wall across the room pointing at the crib, with the cable secured by some trunking that we already had fitted. Everything you need to mount it to the wall is included, though you will need a drill.

How does the monitor look?

The monitor looks great mounted to the wall, and I’d be equally pleased to have it sitting on any surface in my child’s room. Because of it’s smooth compact design it would have been easy to set this up anywhere in the room.

How sturdy is the monitor?

This felt very sturdy, and I had no concerns about it breaking or being damaged when we were travelling to grandparents house.

Some cameras have a wide base and a narrow stem to the camera that feels a little flimsy and difficult to pack when travelling but this is a solid cylindrical shape so great for throwing in a suitcase.

What’s the Momcozy BM01 monitor like to use day to day?

The Momcozy BM01 is an excellent monitor and we’re really impressed with it. It turns on quickly and easily and has excellent connectivity, never once losing signal.

One of the best features of this monitor is the long battery life, so if we’ve had it downstairs during the day while my son has been napping, it doesn’t need to be charged again before we use it at bedtime and can last the whole night without charge.

How is the video quality on the Momcozy Baby Monitor?

The video quality on the Momcozy is exceptionally good and has a full 5 inch HD display which was fantastic! Our other camera for my four-year-old is a BT6000 which on comparison feels like we’re looking at blurry CCTV compared to the sharp visuals of this one.

The zoom feature allows us to see details like if our son's eyes are open or closed - useful when you’re monitoring napping and the night vision means it’s clear to see regardless of time of day.

How is the audio quality on the Momcozy BM01?

The audio quality was very smooth, without any lag which is something I’d encountered with our previous monitor (quite a dramatic sound to wake up to your baby crying out, and then hear it on echo on the monitor!). We used the two way talk function to ask each other to bring down various nappies/pieces of clothing/supplies from his room.

One function I found useful was the screen alert. You can set it up so that when you don’t need the screen you turn it off, but if there’s a sound from baby’s room the screen lights up. Initially I found this a little sensitive, but you can adjust the sensitivity of this setting easily on the handset, which is very intuitive to use.

How is the battery life on the Momcozy baby monitor?

The battery life was really good - if you keep the screen off and don’t plug it in it can last the whole night without charge.

How is the signal quality on the monitor?

We tested this as far as 20m and my husband had it downstairs in the garage with him a couple of times where it maintained connectivity just about although it all depends on construction of the horse and the number of walls and floors it needs to go through.
