How to store sex toys: your guide to storing your sex toys properly
Learn how to keep your sex toys clean, safe, and close at hand with our expert guide to sex toy storage.
By Chloe Roseann | Last updated Mar 17, 2025
When it comes to enjoying sex toys, you might not have considered how to store them properly. It's actually pretty important, not just to keep them ready for use but also to make sure they stay clean and safe.
Proper storage helps in a couple of key ways – it keeps your toys clean and extends their life so you can enjoy them longer.
Our sex toy expert Holly Jackson, Co-Founder at SheSpot, says, “Tossing a vibrator into a drawer with other objects can cause scratches, material breakdown, or button damage over time, shortening its lifespan.”
So, whether you're just starting to explore the world of sex toys or you have a collection to rival a boutique, this guide is set to empower you with all the know-how you need for clean, safe, and effective sex toy storage.
Why proper sex toy storage matters
Health and hygiene come first (no pun intended). Properly storing toys means keeping them clean, reducing the risk of infections or irritation.
The longevity of your toys is another thing to keep in mind. We know that good sex toys aren’t cheap, and storing them correctly means they'll be around to keep satisfying you for much longer.
Plus, it helps you get your money's worth. Knowing how to store different types of toys, like silicone versus battery-operated ones, can keep them in perfect working order for whenever you're in the mood.
Expert Holly Jackson advises that you DON’T just throw your toy(s) in a drawer
How to clean your sex toys
Let’s talk about how to clean your sex toys based on what they’re made from. This way, they’ll stay in great shape and ready for whenever the mood strikes.

Is your toy waterproof?
Before you clean it, it’s important to figure out if your toy likes water. If it’s a simple toy without any electrical parts, or if it's designed to be water-friendly, you’re good to rinse it under the tap.
On the other hand, if your toy isn't meant to be submerged or is only splashproof, a gentle wipe with a damp cloth will do just fine.
Always remove batteries before cleaning if your toy has them.
The basic sex toy cleaning method
Most toys are made from silicone, borosilicate glass (like Pyrex), stainless steel, or ABS plastic, and can be cleaned effectively with some water and a bit of soap.
Here’s what to do:
Rinse or wipe your toy to remove any visible dirt.
Apply a gentle liquid soap and wash it thoroughly. For those hard-to-reach places, a soft toothbrush can be handy.
Rinse off all soap residue or wipe it clean with a damp cloth.
After washing, place your toy on a clean towel to air dry. For battery-operated toys, let them dry with the battery compartment open to make sure everything dries out completely.

What about special sex toy cleaning products?
While there are many cleaning products specifically for sex toys (we know Lovehoney’s Fresh Toy Cleaner is a go-to for Mumsnet users, and Smile Maker's Vibe Wash), good old soap and water usually do the trick just as well.
If you’re looking for a time-saver, some cleaners don’t need rinsing and can be convenient, but otherwise sticking to soap and water is a safe bet.
When to disinfect your toys
Sometimes, a simple wash isn’t enough, especially in the following situations:
You’re sharing toys with a new partner.
The toy has been used during an infection.
You want to switch the toy's use between anal and vaginal.
You want to get rid of an odour.
In these cases, a bit more effort is needed to make your toy thoroughly clean and bacteria-free.
Here are two options:
Boiling: For deep cleaning, waterproof silicone, metal, and glass toys can be boiled for about three minutes. As always, be careful when handling boiling water and avoid sudden temperature changes to prevent damage.
Dishwasher: You can clean waterproof toys (or parts of toys) made of silicone, metal, or glass in the dishwasher. We recommend running a hot, toy-only cycle without a dishwasher tablet, as the detergent can be too harsh. Make sure to pop the toys on the top rack only.

How to store your sex toys
You've cleaned your collection, but what's next? Storing them correctly is just as essential to ensure they stay fresh, safe, and in tip-top shape.
Choosing the right storage
The first step is deciding where to stash them. Holly says, “Many sex toys come with their own storage pouches, which are not only practical but also look gorgeous! These are great for keeping your toy dust-free and protected from damage.”
“If your toy doesn’t come with a pouch, look for storage bags made from antibacterial materials like silicone or lined with antimicrobial fabric.”

Avoiding cross-contamination
Mixing your toys, especially those made of different materials, can cause issues. Holly explains that certain materials (especially silicone and jelly-like compounds) can react when in contact, causing them to degrade or melt.
She suggests that those with multiple toys consider a dedicated storage box with dividers to prevent toys from touching.
Storing battery-operated toys
If your toy has batteries, it's wise to remove them before you put them away to prevent corrosion or power drainage.
For rechargeable toys, giving them a good charge before putting them away ensures they're ready to go when the mood strikes you next. Just remember to keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to keep their motors happy.
Keeping them discreet
Not everyone wants their collection out in the open, and that's perfectly okay! Holly says, “Many brands now offer lockable cases with compartments to organise toys and chargers.”
Looking for something more low-key? Here’s an idea: “A simple cosmetic case or velvet pouch can blend in seamlessly with your bedside drawer essentials.”

Common mistakes
A few no-nos to keep in mind include avoiding storing your toys in plastic bags (these can trap moisture and encourage bacteria growth) and not storing wet or damp toys (always ensure they're dry first). Keeping these mistakes in check will help maintain your toys' quality and safety.
Holly has a few other tips. “If you use a storage bag, make sure it’s washed regularly to avoid bacterial buildup.”
It’s also wise to avoid extreme temperatures. “Heat can warp some materials, and cold can make them brittle, so keep your toys in a cool, dry place.”
How should I clean and dry sex toys before storing?
Simply clean your toys with mild soap and water. Make sure they're completely dry before tucking them away to avoid mould or bacteria buildup.
Most toys are easy to clean with just mild soap and water
Can I store all my sex toys together?
No, it's best to keep them separate. Different materials can interact when they touch, possibly ruining your toys. To avoid any issues, use individual storage or a box with dividers for each toy.
What's the right way to store silicone versus glass sex toys?
Store silicone toys in fabric pouches away from light and heat. Glass toys might need a bit more care — use a padded container to prevent chips or breaks.
Do I need to remove batteries from my toys before storing?
Yes, remove batteries to prevent leaks, which can damage your toy. For rechargeables, this also helps keep their battery life longer.
What are some discreet storage options?
Lots of choices here! You could opt for a lockable box, or a velvet pouch that looks just like another item on your shelf. The goal is for your toys to be private but easy to reach when you want some me-time.
